Although osteoporosis has a strong genetic component, there are a number of things thast people can do
to reduce the risk of developing this condition:
- Maintain adequate levels of calcium and vitamin D. Adults need between 1000 and 1200 milligrams of calcium each day, children and
young people need 1300mg per day. 400-800 iu per day is the recommended daily intake for vitamin D;
- Be physically active (at least 30 minutes of exercise each day for adults and one hour for children). Bone responds to exercise by becoming
stronger. Jogging, brisk walking, hiking, weight lifting, climbing stairs, dancing and tennis are all appropiate weight bearing exercises;
- Identify and remove trip hazards in the home;
- Review any medication that could weaken the bones;
- Maintain a healthy weight, being underweight raises the risk of bone loss and fracture;
- Don't smoke as this reduces bone mass;
- Limit alcohol use as excessive drinking reduces bone mass and increases the risk of breaking bones;
