The symptoms of heart failure may be constant or they may come or go, they can range from mild to severe in extent.
Breathlessness. Heart failure causes fluid to build up in the lungs which causes shortness of breath with exercise or when lying flat in bed. Congested lungs can also cause a dry cough or wheezing.
Fluid retention. With heart failure, the heart pumps less blood to the kidneys which in turn causes fluid retention in other parts of the body resulting in swollen ankles, legs and abdomen. The additional fulid in the body results in weight gain.
Fatigue. People can often feel extremely tired because less blood is getting to their major organs and muscles.
Dizziness and confusion. A reduced amount of blood reaching the brain can cause confusion and some dizziness.
Rapid or irregular heartbeat. The heart tries to compensate for its weakness by pumping faster. This can cause an irregular heartbeat.
A reduced ability to exercise.
Lack of appetitie and nausea.
