People who have a vehicle provided by this scheme can automatically switch to receiving the higher rate of Mobility Allowance at any age providing you are still eligible because of your disability.

The Invalid Vehicle Scheme is due to end in April 2003.

Up to 31 March 2003, if you are or were being helped by the scheme you can switch to DLA without going through the usual procedures for claiming. After this date you will be automatically transferred onto the higher rate of the mobility component of DLA. If you are switching from the old scheme, you normally have to give up your invalid vehicle as soon as you get DLA. But if you have a three-wheeler, you may be able to keep it for a limited period of time if you are using your allowance to get a car, and you need to learn how to drive it. The overlap period will not normally exceed six months. You can switch to DLA if you have a car or three-wheeler provided under the Invalid Vehicle Scheme. you must satisfy the medical conditions of the old Invalid Vehicle Scheme (medical examinations are not normally required).

There is no upper age limit – DLA is payable throughout your lifetime as long as you continue to satisfy the medical conditions for the old Invalid Vehicle Scheme, and as long as you are able to benefit from getting out and about

In order to change to the higher rate, you should write to the Invalid Vehicle Scheme at-
