The following tables set out the various categories of activities and the normal status of each.

Adventurous training activities that are recognised as on duty.

Joint Service Adventurous Training Course or Formal Adventurous training conducted during Phase 1 or Phase 2 training and Directed Army Level 2 Adventurous Training in productive service.

On duty-

a) when participating in an activity required to meet the primary aim of the course or training.

b) when travelling to and from course/training location, and between latter and activity areas.

Off duty-

When participating in other activities that are not required to meet the primary aims of the training such as social events.

Details of JS Adventurous Training Courses are listed in JSP 419.

Directed Army level 2 training is mandated military training using the medium of adventurous activities.

Adventurous training expeditions of any duration.

On duty-


a) When participating in an activity recognised under the Joint Service Adventurous Training Scheme or the single Service Adventurous Training regulations and required to meet the aims of the expedition.

b)When travelling to and from parent unit and expedition base and between the latter and activity areas.

Off duty-

When participating in other activities not required to meet the aims of the expedition such as social events.

An appropriate application form must be completed for the expedition, endorsed by a recognised Service authority.

May include the use of in-country guides and other services provided by civilian companies, if essential to meet the aims of the expedition and in accordance with single-Service regulations.

It is not possible to legislate for every eventuality and therefore, every incident arising from participation in an expedition would be judged on a case-by-case basis.

Adventurous activities involving the Prince's Trust.

On duty-

When involved in activities required by involvement with the Prince's Trust.

Recognised in the "Armed Forces Youth Policy" for those formally appointed to assist with the Prince's Trust as part of "Team Challenge".

Adventurous activities with other civillian companies and organisations

Off duty.

Civillian companies and organisations offer opportunities for young people to benefit from adventurous activities and Service personnel can volunteer as leaders or participants. Personnel are required to take leave.

Physical Education and Physical Exercise that are recognised as "on duty".

Undertaking one of the Service mandated physical fitnees or swimming competency tests

On duty

Developing and maintaining physical fitness standards and swimming competency.

On Duty:

When undertaking a programme that is a service recognised direct method of developing one of the componenents of physical fitness (aerobic capacity, muscular endurance, strength or flexibility) or swimming competency.

a) May be conducted out of working hours.

b)progammes may be taken individually or in groups and classes, and may be supervised by an appropriate Service authority.

c) If an individual is engaged in physical activity that is unsupervised by a Service authority and is using private facilities outside the individual's normal working hours, the person concerned will only be considered to be on duty if it can be shown that they are undertaking a programme that is a Service recognised method of significantly developing one of the components of physical fitness.

d) In the event of an incident or injury that occurs whilst unsupervised by a Service authority, to be covered by the scheme the individual will have to demonstrate that the activity was part of a regular physical exercise programme (such as running, cycling, swimming, circuit training and weight training) to remain physically fit or in preparation for one of the SAervice mandated tests of physical fitness or swimming competency.

Sports Ativities that are recognised as "on duty".

Events in "synopsis" and "recognised" sports authorised by a recognised Service Authority.(see table "B").

On duty when:

a) Participating or officiating in, or organising authorised inter-section, unit,command/corps/divisional Single Service or Combined Services fixtures or meets.

b) Participating in authorised unit competitions for individuals eg unit squash ladder.

c) Attending such events as nominated Sports Association official.

d) Travelling to and from such fixtures.

e) Travelling to and from and participating in officially organised training for such events.

Categorisation of "synopsis" and "recognised" is reviewed annually by the Combined Services Sports Board.

"Authorised" means formal authorisation by Combined Services or Single Service Sports Board or Unit Commander.

Authorisation for overseas visits can only be given by the Combined Services or Single Services Sports Board.

Events in "synopsis" and "recognised" sports authorised by a recognised Service Authority.

off Duty-

If the activity is not required to meet the primary aims of the authorised event such as social events.

Events in "approved" sports authorised by a recognised Service Authority

On duty when:

Participating, officiating in or organising authorised inter-Service or individual Service Championships.

Off duty:

At all other times, including when participating in organised fixtures.

To be covered by the scheme, such championships must be authorised by Combined Services or Single Service Sports Board.

Official Single Service and Inter-Services Championships in "Recognised" winter sports held overseas.

On duty when:

a) Travelling to and from the authorised overseas destination.

b) Taking part in official activities from departure from accommodation each day until completion of day's formal competition, training or official's duties.

c) Attending formal briefings and presentations.

Off duty:

Participating in activities outside competition or training events, including free time activities.

To be covered by the scheme, such events must be authorised by Combined Services or Single Service Sports Board.

Activities organised by Service Sports Associations other than those above.

On duty:

a) Attending an Authorised Association Committee meeting.

b) Representing Service at meetings of Sport's Regional or National Governing Body.

c) Travelling to and from such meetings.

Off duty:

Participating in activity not required to meet the primary aims of the authorised meeting such as social events.

To be covered by the scheme, such events must be authorised by Combined Services or Single Service Sports Board.

Participating in activities associated with those categorised as "other" sports by Combined Services Sports Board.

Off duty

Playing for or any involvement with a civilian team (including regional or national) or representing a regional/national body of sport.
